Nordiska's Acorn Embroidery Kit – A 1960s Classic
Originally introduced in the mid-1960s, Nordiska's Acorn pattern was a beloved design sold in Sweden and at The Needlewoman Shop on Regent Street in London. As one of the first three patterns we reprinted after discovering the archive, it remains a favorite worldwide.
What's Included in the Kit:
- Hand-Printed Linen Panel: Approx. 50 x 50 cm
- Linen Threads: 7 shades, 10 skeins in total
- Visual Instructions: A card and a poster featuring a photograph of the original artwork from the Nordiska Archive, an English translation of the stitches used, and a brief history of its origins
- Stitch Guide: A handy stitch card detailing 24 common stitches used by Nordiska, an exact replica of the 1960s version, typos included!
- Chenille Needle: Size 22
A Bit of History:
The Acorn pattern was designed around 1966-67 by an unnamed artist in Nordiska’s Gothenburg studio. It made its way into the sales catalogue of The Needlewoman Shop in London by 1970, marking Nordiska's presence beyond Scandinavia.
Simply follow the numbers and shades on the main card to recreate the light and dark tones of the original piece. The noted numbers on the card are from the 1960s, so use the 1-7 codes to stitch your version.
Care Instructions:
To maintain the lustre of the linen embroidery, we recommend avoiding washing. As was customary in the 1960s, dry cleaning is suggested. The screen print features permanent colour, so your embroidery will beautifully overlay the printed lines.
Additional Options:
If you’d like to create a cushion, see our fabric selection. You can also match the Acorn panel with tweed, vintage linen, or similar fabrics.
We hope you enjoy bringing this wonderful design back to life. If you remember this kit from the 60s or 70s, we’d love to hear your story!
