An embroidery design from Nordiska featuring a traditional Adventsstake / Advent candlestick, with four live candles. The Advent candlesticks stand in parts of the northern hemisphere, where December is the darkest month of the year, also symbolic of "a light in the darkness".
The custom came to Sweden at the end of the 19th century and spread widely in the country. From this tradition developed a custom, partly with a candlestick with seven candles, one for each day of the week, and one with four candles, one for each Sunday in Advent.
In Sweden, many Advent candlesticks are made of lacquered sheet steel and can be decorated with window lichen and small ornaments, for example "tomte", cones, berries and mushrooms. The lights are usually white or red. The liturgical color of Advent is purple or blue, and it is a common color for several of the Advent candles, often combined with white, red or pink candles for Christmas.
